Final for Nebraska vs Wyoming

Nebraska came out from the locker room and stepped up their game. I would have to say that Wyoming is better than anticipated. They have a good team and a freshman quarterback who was pretty good. Too bad the Cowboys didn't play in Memorial Stadium as they would have been in awe of the stadium, the sea of red and the noise.

The game is over with Nebraska a win with 38 to Wyoming 14.

I was confused as Nebraska had 54 seconds on the clock and were on the 5 yard line. My thoughts were run the ball into the end zone. Add another 7 pts. To my amazement, QB Martinez took a knee. Whhaaattt? Obviously stuck in the Osborne era, I wanted to run up the score as Coach Tom was known to do.

Then the announcers said that Coach Pelini was sending a message to the coach at Wyoming. That message being that he respects what the Cowboys did today and that they played a good game. Again, I would agree. Wyoming was a good opponent and played an awesome game.

Go Big Red!! Love the Huskers and Coach Pelini knows when to show respect.

Nebraska is now at 4-0 and next week they will play Wisconsin at their stadium. My mistake if I had stated they would play in Lincoln. Game time is 7 PM/ABC.

Halftime NE vs WY

As they go into the locker room, Wyoming can pat themselves on the back. The score is NE 14 and Wyoming 7. A long way from my prediction of 47-10. Nebraska will need to run up and down the field in the 2nd half of the game and I hope they do. Maher, the kicker for Nebraska who has a perfect record for field goals, missed the goal by inches before the half.

Not that I'm blaming the altitude on the team but Nebraska can do better. This is puzzling for me as I watch them play. Or my other theory as I watch the scores of other teams on college gameday, may be Nebraska is taking it easy this week in anticipation of their matchup with Wisconsin next week?

This Husker fan is thinking that if Nebraska does not rally back-they will do poorly against Wisconsin next week. Normally, I don't like looking ahead at games and stick to the theory of 'one game at a time.' However, I am looking at the Iowa game (day after Thanksgiving in Lincoln) and will follow Iowa stats.

Nebraska buckle down and come out in the 2nd half making the much needed plays up and down the field!!

Past the First Quarter

Nebraska is playing stupid. Not sure what strategy the Cornhuskers are using. Perhaps the coaches feel this will be an easy win and is allowing Martinez to utilize his arm and throw passes. It's not working. The Nebraska QB threw 3 passes in a row and they were not catchable.

Going to the air is not an option and I would hate to see the Huskers drop in the polls for what I could see as a capable win. Is it just my opinion that Wyoming is better than expected or Nebraska is not really that good?

The defense for Nebraska is great but it takes a good offense and defense to win games. The defense cannot play alone.

The true Wyoming freshman QB is marching the team down the field. What is happening? And the announcers are loving it. Not good.

Wyoming vs. Nebraska

The game has started. This is my first look at the Wyoming Cowboys football team and stadium. It looks like a high school football field and the announcers said that it holds 32,000 people. I know Nebraska will not be intimidated as the stadium in Lincoln holds more than 80,000 people. They added 3,000 more seats to accommodate the fans.

According to score prediction tracker Nebraska is expected to win by 21 points. My prediction is 47-10 with Nebraska winning.
Nebraska won the toss, Wyoming is up first and unable to make it down the field. Nebraska and Martinez are on the field. QB for NE appears a little flustered and goes down with a sack . . . . Martinez needs to shake it off.
I heard that the altitude might be an issue as Wyoming is higher than Colorado. Wyoming's defense is looking good so Nebraska will need to step it up.
More later . . . .

50 College Football Teams, Players and Coaches You Want To Hate

I watched a little bit of college football today--Notre Dame was playing and I can't remember who their opponent was. My interest was solely that I wanted ND to lose and I didn't care who they played. Unfortunately, I flipped through channels and did not see the game to the end.
So then I'm scanning through websites searching for information about my favorite college team, Nebraska and my attention was caught by the following article . . .

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/845627-college-football-2011-50-coaches-players-and-teams-no-one-wants-to-see-win

50 College Football Teams, Coaches and Players that you want to hate. Surely, Nebraska couldn't be on that list. Unfortunately, halfway through to my amazement--NE is on the list for leaving the Big 12 Conference. Colleges do what they have to do as long as it's not illegal or is good for the athletic program. Honestly, I don't know the entire reason Nebraska left but I'm pretty sure it had to do with money and more television time.
Teams that I dislike are on the list more than once. So I don't feel bad for disliking the college teams as others feel the same as I.
What provokes a football fan to feel that way? For me, I would say it is the arrogance of the coach and the way the team struts onto the field. Also, and maybe to their benefit, this team that I dislike wins games. All the time. I think I feel envy and some resentment that they use trick plays and grudgingly admit they may have a strong program with great players. That is hard to admit.
A week or so ago I was caught up in a passionate chat on the teams' facebook page (the team I dislike) for what I saw on the field as I wished they lost their game. The fans responded back to me by name calling and proceeded to dredge up actions that happened to Nebraska off the field. It was then that I realized that it wasn't worth the discussion.
Name calling is not necessary and other references were futile.
I have never gone to a Nebraska game and stared down the fans. I've had it happen to me at opponents' football stadiums. There was a time I was afraid for my safety.
So as I end this post, I wonder why we feel so much that passion for "our" team? When I find out--I'll let you know.
Or comment below with your thoughts.

Game Final - Between Nebraska and Washington

I received my news alert from WOWT the final score NE 51 - WA 38 even though I watched the game on TV. Another W for Nebraska taking them to 3 and 0. Go Big Red!
Toward the end of the game in NE it began to rain. No surprise. It is definitely fall as the temperature was in the high 50's. Miserable weather.
Back to the prediction tracker. There was a 17 point favoring NE over Washington with a 4 pt differential. Not bad. It was a 13 pt difference so I'll be checking out the link for next week.
I'll be posting weekly scores tomorrow for the Big Ten and I already know who my feature player from Nebraska will be. Of course, they all played as a team or cohesive. Martinez was awesome, and Burkhead needs his kudos as he is a beast. And of course there is Crick who had an amazing body slam tackle. Whoo. So many players; who to choose? Maybe I'll feature two guys.

And an FYI for anyone who has a phone that can get apps. There is a free app for Nebraska fans called Husker Bud. Love it! Check it out. I'm off to watch either the Ohio State or the Oklahoma game.

4th Quarter Nebraska Stats

I predicted the score between the two teams as Nebraska 40 - Washington 17.

The current score is Cornhuskers 44 and Huskies 24. Passed up my numbers. However, the prediction tracker is right on the money.

Who Are My Favorite Teams?

Some of you may or may not know it but this is Nebraska's first year in the Big Ten. They came from the Big 12 and I have to say, it is hard to drop the old rivalries. I'm still hoping that certain Big 12 Teams get taken down.
I have a shirt that says "My two favorite teams are Nebraska and whoever plays K-State." I didn't see K-State as a huge rival, nor Kansas, Missouri and a few others. Not to say these teams have not beat Nebraska at some time or another. Sorry to my K-State friends.
So I need to purchase about 10 to 15 new shirts and they will read as follows:

My Favorite Team Is Whoever Plays Texas . . . sorry DP
My Favorite Team is Whoever Plays Oklahoma
My Favorite Team is Whoever Plays Colorado
My Favorite Team is Whoever Plays Iowa
My Favorite Team is Whoever Plays Iowa State
My Favorite Team is Whoever Plays Notre Dame
My Two Favorite Teams Are Nebraska and Whoever Plays Ohio State
My Two Favorite Teams Are Nebraska and Whoever Plays Penn State
My Two Favorite Teams Are Nebraska and Whoever Plays Michigan
My Two Favorite Teams Are Nebraska and Whoever Plays Wisconsin
My Two Favorite Teams Are Nebraska and Whoever Plays Minnesota

All in fun, of course.

I know who the powerhouse teams are and I appreciate spirit and drive by college teams. I dislike ugliness and I have seen if from Colorado (spitting on player), Iowa who will disrespect you if you wear red to Iowa. Don't challenge me on Iowa or Iowa State cuz I have numerous examples. Oklahoma it just goes without saying.
I know there are a few rogue Husker fans that are hotheads or just plain idiots. They've yelled at the Nebraska players. Idiots.
In the end just remember these players are still kids who attend college And play football. In my opinion, education comes first, football comes second. And if these kids came to Nebraska or whatever on a scholarship or in hopes of going pro, so be it.
Don't be ugly; it's only a game.

Off To A Great Start In The Second Half

Nebraska brought the defense and no score by the Huskies.

Of course, a penalty is called on the kick to Nebraska and a call is given to the sideline of Washington. I felt the my blood pressure rise. What the heck? Ok, I get it after watching the replay. No halo rule anymore. Burkhead caught the ball and was stopped immediately. I understand their frustration as this is the second penalty call on a kick to Nebraska.
My thoughts: There are always bad calls. Injuries, mistakes and other snaffoos. As long as I've watched football--there have been a gazillion bad calls that have been impacted games. So commentators--drop it. . . .

Nebraska kicked the ball to Washington and did you get the number of the Husker that plowed into the return man? What a hit! It was #46. . . Huskies kicking back to Nebraska . . . more later

Nebraska vs Washington at Half Time

Half Time. Nebraska goes into the locker room with 20 to 17. My perception of the game is a lot of sloppiness. Washington. The Cornhuskers. The Officials. Too many penalties and we all know those come back to bite you in the butt.
Even I know that penalties don't win games. Stop Nebraska. Washington carry on.
However, the officials? What is up with the confusion? Maybe when you're doling out penalties get the right jersey number. Or possibly wear glasses? Or ask another official?
Was that 84 or I meant number 88 and that was for Washington.
Earlier they called a penalty on the NE player who tackled the Husky around the ankles and the officials said he had a facemask - 15 yards. Wow, sign that guy to the NBA cuz he has a long reach.
The Huskies will come out and get the ball after the half. Come on Nebraska, don't let them march up and down the field. DEFENSE!!

Nebraska Off To A Great Start

Nebraska game vs Washington Huskies off to a great start. Two plays and 34 seconds in - Nebraska scores. Huskies respond and also score. Tied game within 2 or 3 minutes. Well, heck this set the tone of this game. Go Bi. .i . . g Re..e..e..ee.d!!!! Lets Go!!

Washington Huskies Are Coming To Lincoln!

It's going to be an exciting day in Lincoln on Sat, Sept 17th as the Washington Huskies come to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers! Besides it being cool and possibly a rainy day, if you're not at the game, you can watch it on ABC at 2:30 CST.

According to bloggers on The Lincoln Journal Star a lot of people are predicting (naturally) that the Huskers will beat the Huskies by an average of 7 points. People at work are predicting the same. According to the prediction tracker, if I read it correctly, Nebraska will win by 17 pts with a variance of 4 points. Check this link to see if I read it correctly--
http://www.thepredictiontracker.com/predncaa.html

The info below is taken from http://beat.bodog.eu with extreme gratitude as they also predict NE to win by 17 points:

Think the Washington Huskies and Nebraska Cornhuskers are tired of each other? They probably will be by Saturday evening after the schools meet for the third team in almost exactly one calendar year. The 11th-ranked Huskers are 17-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds for this one.

Last Sept. 18 the Huskers went to Seattle and throttled UW 56-21 behind now-sophomore QB Taylor Martinez, who accounted for 287 total yards and four scores. Nebraska rushed for 383 yards and netted 533 total yards in the blowout. It had three players, including Martinez, with at least 100 yards rushing. But UW turned the tables in last December’s Holiday Bowl, winning 19-7 in Washington QB Jake Locker’s final college game. This time the Huskies’ defense held Nebraska to only 189 total yards. Chris Polk rushed for 177 yards as UW put up 268 on the ground.

So here we are again with both teams at 2-0. The Huskers have had few problems thus far in beating Chattanooga and Fresno State by a combined score of 62-31. Martinez has thrown for 335 yards and a score on the season and leads the team with 301 yards rushing and five scores. Washington has played two close games, beating FCS power Eastern Washington by just a field goal and then Hawaii last week 40-32. New starting QB Keith Price has been solid, completing 70 percent of his passes for 417 yards and seven scores. Polk has rushed for 232 yards and a score.

One of UW’s key defensive players, starting safety Nate Fellner, aggravated a hamstring injury against Hawaii last weekend and is doubtful for Saturday's game. This is only the sixth time since 1997 that two teams from different conferences will play three times in two seasons.

My prediction is Huskers 40 and Puppies 17. Go Big Red!!

Big Ten Scores For Week Two

Wisconsin 35 - Oregon State 0
Michigan State 44 - Florida Atlantic 0
Illinois 56 - South Dakota State - 3
Ohio State 27 - Toledo 22
Iowa State 44- Iowa 41
Northwestern 42 - Eastern Illinois 21
Alabama 21 - Penn State 11
New Mexico State 28 - Minnesota 21
Rice 24 - Purdue 22
Nebraska 42 - Fresno State 29
Michigan 35 - Notre Dame 31
Virginia 31 - Indiana 34
Of course, I'm thrilled for my team Nebraska but kudos to Michigan for surging ahead in the last few minutes of the game!!

The Big Ten had 7 wins and 5 losses.  A sad performance for the second week although Michigan State and Illinois had huge wins over their opponents.

Scores for the teams who lost came close but still a loss.
**Big Ten teams are underlined

2nd Half - Husker-domination Against Fresno State

No doubt I was somewhat worried as I watched the first half of the football game. Fresno State was having their way in Memorial Stadium.

Still a little nervousness in the beginning of the half but the Huskers Defense and Offense stepped it up.  It was all Cornhuskers in the 2nd half.

Final Score -- Nebraska 42 - Fresno 29

Congratulations Big Red!  2 Wins/No Losses

NE vs Fresno

2nd half the score is Nebraska 21 - Fresno State 20.  The defense is doing a great job. Martinez just threw a huge pass to Reed down field.  Keep the momentum. And Birkhead waltzed into the end zone for a touchdown.  Score now 28 to 20 . . . . .

2nd Quarter - NE vs Fresno State

Nebraska fans it has been ugly.  Fresno has 14 points with Nebraska 7. Fresno has managed to stroll down the field easily.  QB Martinez for NE sprinted down the field early but he also he had an interception and two fumbles. The defense for the Huskers is putting a halt to the offense of FS which is really needed.  The offense of Nebraska needs to get in the locker room and get their heads on straight.

Score Prediction for Nebraska vs Fresno State

In a just a few hours Nebraska will be playing at home against Fresno State. Much has been said that it has been hard for opponents to win in Memorial Stadium.  However, it has been done in the past but not today. In a few hours according to Scout.com they are predicting Nebraska to win over Fresno State at 27 to 10.

Summary of what to expect today:  Nebraska will win relatively easily and should be in control all game long, but it's not going to be a dominant performance. The offense will break off a few big runs, but the passing game will still sputter and cough. Fresno State won't get anything going on the ground, and while Carr will throw for over 200 yards, he'll be held in check on third downs.

I'll be back later for a review of the game.  Go Big Red!!.

California Members Wear Husker Gear to Represent Their Street Gang

I love the red, the N, the football team for different reasons than the street gang in California. Wow, should this be a compliment or a failure?  It's an easy answer. We may have had thugs on the team a few years back but they're gone now.  Go Big Red, Lil Red, Herbie Husker and Husker Nation would not be happy with the new gang attire as mentioned in this article.  These gang bangers probably don't know where the state of Nebraska is located.  So my advice, remove the N and the red and stick to what you know which is probably a whole lot of nothing!

Nebraska vs. Miami 1994 Orange Bowl

There is not much on TV so I turned the channel to the Big Ten Channel and they're replaying one of the Big Ten's Greatest Games.  It is somewhat ironic since Nebraska played their first game as part of the Big Ten Conference last week.

The game is the National Championship game between Nebraska and Miami on January 1, 1995.

I find it interesting as Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis played for Miami.  They're playing for the NFL is well known.

And then there is Lawrence Phillips who was a running back for Nebraska. A huge waste of talent who didn't have his head on straight. Lawrence came from a broken home and his problems continued while in college. There was a lot of controversy at the time because many believed that Osborne gave Phillips too many chances.  Maybe so.

I researched Lawrence Phillips on Wikipedia and he was drafted but his pro career was a bust as well as his personal life. You can read all about LP on Wikipedia but Phillips has a roof over his head as an inmate in the California Prison system for 30-something years.

The biggest tragedy is in regard to Brook Berringer who was a QB for NE at the same time as Tommie Frazier. Berringer brought spark to this particular game however it is painful to hear Brent Musberger talk about Berringer's accomplishments as he is a licensed pilot and he hopes to be a commercial pilot someday. The camera's pan over to his mom and sister in the stands cheering on brother and son.

Two days before the draft in 1996, the plane Berringer was flying along with a friend went down in a field and both were killed. Two lives cut short too soon.

Nebraska won the Championship game.  Nebr 24 vs Miami 17.

Huskers To Play Fresno State Bulldogs

10th Ranked Nebraska To Play Fresno State Bulldogs On Sat Sept 10, 2011 at 6 CST!

Here is what Fresno State has to say about the meeting in Lincoln, Memorial Stadium =

Fresno State head coach Pat Hill said Wednesday after practice that his team is excited about playing the 10th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in its 81,000-plus seat Memorial Stadium on Saturday (4 p.m. PT - Big Ten Network).
"We are going to get a huge, huge test this week," Hill said. "We are going to have to be at the best we've been in some time against Nebraska. With that, it is with great excitement that we go into this game."

After all, this is nothing new to him and his players.
Since Hill took over the program in 1997, Fresno State has faced 42 teams from BSC conferences. The `Dogs have played at the likes of LSU, Tennessee, Ohio State, Oregon, Colorado, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Illinois, Rutgers, Washington and Cal last weekend.
In fact, Fresno State has played the most BCS opponents of any non-BSC school since 2001. Its 15 victories over BCS schools are the second-most in the nation for any non-BCS school in that time.

So don't expect the Bulldogs to be intimidated heading into Lincoln this weekend.
Two years ago, Fresno State traveled to Camp Randall in week two to face Wisconsin in front of a crowd of 80,353. The Bulldogs went punch-for-punch with the Badgers and took them to double overtime before falling, 34-31. Wisconsin finished that season ranked No. 16 with a 10-3 record.

Fresno State has 19 players still on the roster who played in that 2009 game in Madison. Left tackle Bryce Harris, nose tackle Chase McEntee and linebacker Kyle Knox all started against the Badgers that day.

In 2007 it was the same story. Hill's Bulldogs went to Texas A&M's Kyle Field and lost a two-point, triple overtime battle in front of a crowd of 75,922.

However, that is all in the past and the Bulldogs face a new set of challenges this week, mainly Nebraska's potent option rushing attack that is headed by sophomore quarterback Taylor Martinez. Martinez ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-7 win over Tennessee at Chattanooga last weekend.  Fresno State's formula this weekend is to play disciplined football.
"We are going to need to play at a very high level," Hill said. "We have to be very disciplined with our eyes, especially on defense against the option."

Last weekend, Cal ran for 151 yards in the game against Fresno State. However, if you take away two plays - a 39-yard Isi Sofele touchdown run and a 43-yard rush by quarterback Zach Maynard - then Cal only would have had 69 yards rushing on 33 carries (a meager 2.09 average).

Still, limiting the big plays will be vital this weekend.

"We get a great test this week. This is as tough a test as you want from an offensive and defensive standpoint," Hill said. "They are very, very physical up front. They are a very big team and we need to really be zeroed in on this game."

Offensively, the Bulldogs look to bring a balanced attack against one the best defenses in the country.

"On offense, it's going to be a matter of execution and we are going to have to establish our run game," Hill said.

Junior running back Robbie Rouse averaged 5.1 yards per carry on 17 rushes (86 net yards) against Cal, who led the Pac-10 in total defense a year ago. The Bears returned seven defensive starters from their 2010 team.

Sophomore quarterback Derek Carr completed 21-of-33 passes in his starting debut, and looks to build off that game.

"I think as the year goes on we are going to find out that Derek Carr is a very good quarterback," Hill said. "He's stepping into the box with his first two games against two very talented defenses, so his room and margin for error is very small. The people around him got to step up too, and that's what we need to do."

Obviously, with all the wins over some of the top programs in the nation, Hill has never had a problem getting his players ready for a big game.

After all, that's why players come to Fresno State, to play in games like they will this Saturday.

Featured Player: Brett Maher #96 - Nebraska Punter

Someone was missing from the Nebraska game on Saturday against Chattanooga and it was Alex Henery.  Remember him? As in college there comes a time to move on and it is called graduation. Henery was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he will be under the scrutiny of the always-hard-to-please Eagles fans, hungry for their first NFL title since 1960.
In fact, as the Cornhuskers’ 40-7 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga unfolded, it was as though Henery had never left but had only changed jersey numbers
That’s how impressive the debut of Kearney native Brett Maher was Saturday in Memorial Stadium. Maher picked up exactly where Henery left off, punting the Huskers out of danger from his own goal line on the game’s first series, nailing all four of his field goal attempts, including a 50-yarder into the wind on his first try, while averaging 52 yards on four punts, including two inside the Chattanooga 20-yard line.
Back in Lincoln, a lot of Husker observers expected scholarship freshman Mauro Bondi to win the placekicking job vacated by Henery, but on Saturday, there was Maher, looking rock-solid on all his kicks – every last one of them. He even had three touchbacks on kickoffs.
It’s not as though the conditions were ideal. Maher had to deal with winds that swirled in generally from the northwest at 15 to 25 mph. His field goals of 50, 48, 34 and 21 yards, plus his touch as a punter, show that Nebraska has another weapon worth at least 10 points a game, if he can maintain his consistency.
How good was Maher’s first outing? He was the only Husker to receive effusive praise from the hard-to-impress Bo Pelini.
“I’ve been saying all along, we feel really good about Brett and what he brings to the table,” Pelini said in his postgame press conference. “I don’t know if you can have a better start than he had. He really hit the ball well. He hit a couple punts into the wind that were big time. He had a good day. Great day.”
I’m not sure why Pelini also used Bondi on kickoffs. Since Maher is a junior, it seems like the right strategy would be to redshirt Bondi this year, then use him for three years after Maher graduates.

It's Official. College Football Season Has Begun.

My favorite team is the Nebraska Cornhuskers and this year they have joined the Big Ten Conference although there are now twelve teams. Change is good, and there are new opponents. Powerhouse teams such as Ohio State, Michigan and others but tradition is still the same as Nebraska always plays their rival the day after Thanksgiving.

While in the Big 12 the Huskers played Oklahoma and Colorado. The nemesis this year is Iowa. A mere river separates the two states. The two teams have played in the past and the games were luke warm to almost hostile although I would concede that Nebraskans are a friendly bunch.

The Big Ten is off to a good start with ten teams winning their games and of course, there were two losses. My team, Nebraska won their game today against Chattanooga.  Go Big Red.

Every year I create a football schedule and since I don't know a lot about the Big Ten I have included all the schedules of the other eleven teams.  I need to keep up to date on future opponents. I have created a Big Ten version of the College Football Helmets. I have attached the link and it is a PDF.  If you have any questions or see any glaring mistakes, please let me know.
